I bought some honeycomb balls and decorations back in 2023 for Graham’s first birthday party. When I decided on Sonny’s birthday party theme of One in the Sun, I know they would be perfect for another backdrop idea!
I wanted to do an arch backdrop but I debated making and painting one with some materials from Home Depot or get an arch stand with a cover. After going back and forth for a while, I ultimately decided that the arch stand with a cover would be best for a few reasons. I knew I could use them again and they could be broken down and stored in the attic, you can change the color cover any time, and the honeycomb decorations could easily be attached using safety pins.
It was an extremely easy decoration and set up process since I knew how they worked from Graham’s party but it’s not something that is a huge learning curve at all. I bought a few more sizes and colors for this backdrop and they were the perfect addition!
What You Need
- Arched backdrop
- Backdrop covers
- Honeycomb balls and decorations
- Safety pins

How To Set Up The Decorations
There is no one right way to do this. To start, I add one honeycomb ball or fan decoration and start building the design around that. That doesn’t mean you can’t move what you initially started with but it at least gives you a foundation to decorate around.

Each honeycomb decoration comes with a string. The safety pin can go through that string to hold the decoration. Stick the safety pin through the first layer of the backdrop- you have to maneuver a bit to make sure it doesn’t go through both layers. Keeping to just the first layer allows it to not come through the back and just looks nicer. Keeping working around the decorations to add some smaller ones and some bigger ones to add depth and dimension. The safety pins are a great tool to stick them wherever you want and they won’t move.

We also added his milestone monthly photos to the larger arched backdrop! We simply added safety pins to the ends of those strings and pinned the left side to the back and the right side to the front, which was hidden by the smaller arch. We had baby clothes pins to hold the photos and that was it!
